Background
 The Dornfelder varietal is a hybrid created in 1976 from two other hybrids (genetically descended from Fruburgunder, Trollinger, Portugeiser and Lemberger.) Today almost 1000 acres are planted to this variety which produces deeply colored fruity red wine.

P.J. Valckenberg has been a central force in German wines since 1786 and not only produces magnificent wines but was one of the earliest German negociants promoting great wines from other wineries in their area. This Dornfelder rivals the very best in the industry and is produced with our specific market in mind with ample levels of rich, fruity black cherry and spice.

Also, look for blackberry, currant and vanilla in the taste.

Food Parings
 Dornfelder is wonderful; by itself or served with full flavored cheeses and crusty bread. It would combine well with grilled meats that have a natural sweetness to their taste or have been seasoned with bbq sauce. I’ve had the wine with venison and lamb and it was delicious with both.

 Cellar Hints
This wine is ready to enjoy now and will develop a bit if given up to two to three years of aging. If you want to downplay the fruitiness of the wine serve it at room temperature; chilling the wine will put more emphasis on the fruit.

Origin:
The grapes for this wine are taken from the Rheinhessen region of Germany in and around the town of Worms. The area benefits from the insulating effect of a wide expanse of Rhein River in that microclimate and the warm mist that comes off of the water in the evening and early morning. 

Valckenberg uses state-of-the-art production techniques and facilities to produce a wide range of wines with only a small portion of their production coming to the U.S. market.
