Description/Palate
Peirano
Estate Vineyards’ Merlot is produced from 6 different clones, or
sub-varieties, of Merlot grown on the estate.
Our Six Clones Merlot leads with aromas of
currant, cranberry and violet, with hints of toast, coffee and
vanilla. The mouth is filled with an array of flavors, including
cherry, sweet fruit, toast, anise and cinnamon, while supple tannins
leave a pleasing finish on the palate
.
Background
|
Giacomo Peirano arrived in
San Francisco in 1879 from Genoa, Italy. In 1881, he began
farming in Lodi, and year by year he gained a place for himself
pioneering vineyard and orchard development. Planted in the
early 1800's, Peirano Estate was one of the first vineyards in
Lodi. Located in the heart of the Lodi Appellation, the 300
acre estate consists of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
and perhaps the largest single block of old, head-trained,
natural rooted Zinfandel left in California.
Beginning with the hard work
and inspiration of Giacomo Peirano, five generations have grown
and harvested grapes from their vineyard for over 100
consecutive years. Knowing that great wines must begin with the
finest of grapes, it has always been their belief that wine
should reflect the character of the fruit and the land.
Peirano Estate’s Merlot is
produced from 6 different clones grown on the estate [which
include two rare French clones, #181 & #314, which are not
readily available in California, and the Italian clone #9.
Peirano Estate is currently the only winery in California
producing wine commercially from these clones.]. These rare
clones, in conjunction with three common clones are field
blended together. Each clone’s distinctive character combines to
produce complex fruit. |
Food Parings
This is a classic red wine you can use just like a great Pomerol. It
will handle wild game such as venison, grilled meats, pork ribs,
duck, goose or lamb chops. It has the complexity to hold its own
with moderately spicy dishes and a good ripened cheese.
Cellar Hints
Keep it cool (55-65 degrees F).
Will drink best now thru the next 7 or 8 years. No need to wait on
this one...drink away
