2004 Grand Ardèche Chardonnay

Côteaux de l'Ardèche, France
Grape: Chardonnay

Bottle Price: $13.99

Description/Palate
What if you could go back in time 20 years and purchase a really good white Burgundy for for under $25? Here as close an opportunity that you'll ever have to do just that. This delightful Chardonnay is produced exactly as if it were a serious Chassagne-Montrachet with hand selected top quality fruit and hand-crafted production techniques. The wine has round, voluptuous styling with tones of measured French oak and vanilla wrapped around tropical fruit flavors such as pineapple and banana. A great wine experience at bargain prices!

Background

For 200 years the Latour family have sought to find the greatest wines to offer their customers. In this tradition they have discovered an ideal location to produce a Vin de Pays Chardonnay: the Ardèche (350 km south of Beaune).  Louis Latour, has owned vineyards in the Ardèche since 1979. It has made a thoroughly engaging Chardonnay - a Coup de Coeur.

The Ardèche river carves a narrow gorge through the limestone foothills of the Massif Central, it is on these steep slopes that vines have been planted since Roman times, it is here that Maison Louis Latour has planted Chardonnay for the first time. The Ardèche is a barren, rugged, region that is appreciated for its dramatic beauty and has a warm climate with a long hot growing season. These factors combined with the chalk-clay soils make it ideal for the production of high quality Chardonnay. Apart from the excellent wines of the region, the local town of Montélimar has become famous for its local delicacy, nougat. The region as a whole offers a wide variety of agricultural produce ranging from top-quality livestock to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Buying grapes from 180 different growers spread over 380 hectares or 920 acres permits them to select the ripest, highest quality fruit from the most well located vineyard plots for the production of Ardèche Chardonnay  and  Grand Ardèche.

Consistency of climate and abundant sunshine in the Ardèche perfectly ripen these bunches of grapes , while the drying Mistral wind eliminates any risk of rot. The Grand Ardèche is treated as if it were grown in one of the Grand Cru vineyards of the Côte-d’Or. Fully-ripened grapes are selected and pressed lightly before being aged in oak barrels made at the Latour cooperage in Beaune. The result is a full-bodied wine. Traditional oak barrel ageing with 100% malolactic fermentation.

Food Parings
The wine will support serious foods in the fowl & fish areas along with richer, "sweeter" shellfish such as braised scallops, king crab legs, lobster, stone crab and shrimp. I would put this wine next to curried foods and medium spiced Asian dishes as well.

Cellar Hints
Keep it cool (55-65 degrees F).  Will drink well for next three years...should be cellared properly!
