Description
Joseph Rowe Osborn, the founder of d’Arenberg, first became involved
in the wine business when he joined the propering Thomas Hardy &
Sons in 1881, eventually becoming a partner and director. A
colourful character and enthusiastic patron of the turf, he secured
a well-bred chestnut colt named “Footbolt” whose winning streak of
six races helped Joseph in funding the purchase of d’Arenberg’s
first vineyards in 1912. The oldest of the d’Arenberg blocks was
planted in the 1880’s with Shiraz, and still contributes to their
wines even today. As with all d’Arenberg premium reds, traditional
open fermenters (where old style foot treading in wader-clad feet
takes place) and basket presses were used for the 2002 Footbolt
Shiraz to ensure maximum development of colour and flavour. The
natural minimum processing practises (no fining or filtration)
ensures maximum flavour and may result in some deposit left in the
bottle. Received a “90” from The Wine Spectator
Origin
The Southern Vales district starts almost in the southern outskirts
od Adelaide in southwestern Australia. This is the area renouned as
the home of Australia’s famous Grange Hermitage and a host of other
magnificent red wines. D’Arenberg is nestled into the foothills of
the Mount Lofty range. This provides great drainage and intense
afternoon sun which results in great fruit concentration and
powerful red wine styling.
Food Parings
The size and complexity of this red makes it a perfect choice for
grilled meats, particularly lamb and wild game such as venison. It
would also compliment hearty French-style stews very well. (ie,
Beouf Bouguignon, Cassoulet, etc.)
